Navigating menopause in the workplace
Every October, World Menopause Awareness Month encourages us to talk openly about a topic that affects more than half the population but still too often goes undiscussed – especially at work.
At Simply Washrooms, we believe that building inclusive and supportive workplaces means recognising and understanding every stage of life. Menopause is not an illness or a disease; it’s a natural biological transition that every woman will experience. Yet, despite its universality, conversations around menopause have historically been shrouded in silence.
Why talking about menopause at work matters
For many women, the symptoms of menopause – such as hot flushes, sleep disturbances, fatigue, and changes in mood or concentration – can have a significant impact on their working day. Without awareness or support, these challenges can lead to stress, embarrassment, and even women leaving the workforce prematurely.
The reality is, menopause doesn’t just affect individuals; it affects teams, productivity, and overall workplace wellbeing. When businesses take the time to understand and accommodate this life stage, they create environments where women can continue to thrive, contribute, and feel valued.
Breaking the silence
Encouraging open conversation is the first step. By creating spaces where employees feel comfortable talking about menopause – free from stigma or awkwardness – organisations can normalise it as part of the broader wellbeing agenda.
Simple measures, such as flexible working, temperature control in offices, access to rest areas, and inclusive HR policies, can make a real difference. But equally important is education: ensuring that managers and colleagues understand what menopause is, how it manifests, and how to offer support without judgement.
At Simply Washrooms, we’re proud to partner with Grace & Green and their Period Dignity Programme, which empowers organisations to provide sustainable period care and raise awareness of menstrual and menopausal health at work. Together, we’re helping businesses take meaningful steps towards creating workplaces that are both inclusive and environmentally responsible.
Looking ahead
Breaking the silence around menopause is not just a women’s issue – it’s a workplace wellbeing issue. By talking about it, supporting it, and integrating it into company culture, we can make sure no one feels invisible or isolated during this stage of life.
Because when we support women through menopause, we support them to stay, to lead, and to thrive.
