Simply wins at the 2025 Sustainability Awards
Simply Washrooms was awarded the Judges’ Choice Award (Regional) at the prestigious Metsä Sustainability Awards 2025! This recognition celebrates our unwavering commitment to reducing plastic waste and pioneering sustainable practices in the workplace hygiene industry.
Why We Won: A Story of Innovation and Impact
When we set out in 2021 to become the most sustainable workplace hygiene company in the world, we knew it would take bold action. Our carbon footprint analysis revealed a critical challenge: the widespread use of virgin plastic in hygiene products. Determined to make a difference, we embarked on a mission to reduce our virgin plastic usage from 73% in 2022 to just 40% by the end of 2024.
Here are some of the reasons the judges awarded us the accolade:
1. Pioneering Recycled Plastic Hygiene Bins
No one in our industry had attempted large-scale adoption of recycled plastics, so we wrote the rulebook ourselves. Partnering with Kennedy Hygiene, we sourced recycled plastic aggregates from UK suppliers, repurposing materials from WEEE and automobile recycling. After rigorous testing and client education, we launched the first fully recycled hygiene bins in 2021. By April 2024, 65.4% of the bins we sold were made from recycled plastic – a game-changer for the industry.
2. Closing the Loop on Plastic Waste
We didn’t stop at recycled bins. Our closed-loop recycling programme ensures that end-of-life plastic products are fully recycled into materials for new products. This initiative has already led to:
42% of all input plastic now recycled (up from 27% in 2022)
26% of plastic in use being re-used or reconditioned bins.
3. Measurable Environmental Benefits
Our efforts have delivered tangible results:
16% reduction in total plastic across all products
7% decrease in our carbon footprint (369 tCO2e to 344 tCO2e)
20% drop in Carbon Intensity (90 to 71.7).
4. Industry Leadership
We’re proud to be the first workplace hygiene supplier in the UK to drive recycled plastics in manufacturing and the first globally to achieve B Corp certification in 2023. Our clients have embraced this journey, aligning with their own ESG goals to create a true win-win for sustainability.
